-An history of the French literature from its origin to the end of the seventeenth century.
This book which serves as an introduction to the French literature deals not only with the literature of the 17th century but also gives a brief account of this language and literature from its very beginning .Part 1-deals with literature of the medieval period(11th to 15th century. Part 2 encompasses the literature of Renaissance viz 16thcentury. and part 3 deals with the literature of the seventeenth century. Closely following he era of Shakespeare, the French drama is very rich and varied with significant contributions from Corneille, Racine, Moliere.
The preface to this book has been given by no less a person than Francois Gros, director of philological and historical studies of South India at the Practical School of higher studies Sorbonne University. Here is an extract of his scholarly foreword:
